Can Emotional Intelligence Help Hair Stylists?
People and Social Skills in Business Equals Success
There are numerous studies of high emotional intelligence (EQ) and business persons, sales and marketing individuals, as well as CEO’s and leaders. Harvard Business Review has numerous articles documenting these traits (https://hbr.org/2015/04/how-emotional-intelligence-became-a-key-leadership-skill) for example.
But can a high level of emotional intelligence help hair stylists also?
Let’s look at one example to find out.
Courtney – the Stylist
Courtney is a great stylist. She works hard, is dedicated, stays on top of trends and even recently updated her work-space.
She often wonders though why her client base wasn’t growing like others, and in fact some were leaving, including long-time customers.
What is the Problem?
She definitely was discouraged. At this point she should be doing better. She imagined more income, more flexibility, and even her own salon one day. But she feels that she is working harder, and not earning more. The independent salon is not anywhere in the near future if things continue this way also.
What is the answer?
Social and People Skills
A friend told her about a course in social and people skills and recommended Courtney do the same. It helped her business tremendously, and she knows Courtney would benefit also.
Courtney agreed to take the “emotional intelligence” course. She always thought she was a “people person”, but also knows (and has been told by her close friends) that sometimes she doesn’t listen well and talks too much, probably because she lacks confidence and feels she needs to talk to be comfortable.
EQ-i 2.0 Assessment
What an eye-opener! Courtney took the course, and decided to take the personal assessment. Her friends were right! Her scores reflected what they said, and what she likely knew all along.
That was the first step. At least she now had evidence of some areas that may be affecting her business.
Why didn’t others tell her sooner? She could’ve been on the way to higher income, more time off, and possibly even her own place.
Understanding One’s Emotions Is Key
She put those thoughts out of her mind and took steps in the right direction to improve herself: not dominating conversations, listening to what others are really saying, and even feeling more confident in her communication.
Courtney knows it will take work. But she worked hard to get where she is now, and she will not give up!
Her clients love her! She is bold enough now to stop, listen, and speak appropriately and with confidence and energy.
More Referrals… More Business!
She has already noticed more referrals recently too. Most customers want to be listened to, and many will refer new clients when they are satisfied, feel trusted and respected.
Courtney is on her way to that higher income, more time with her family, and one day she knows she will have her own salon, all thanks to understanding her emotions, how they affect others, and how to communicate effectively.
